Real tanks have as-built tolerance β€” shell out-of-roundness, head deformation, internal fittings and ladders that displace volume, and settlement that reshapes the bottom over time. The calculator's volume is exact for the model, but the model is a simplification of the vessel.

Mill Tolerance & Average Densities Are Real

A tank labeled 1,000 gallons rarely calibrates to exactly 1,000 usable gallons, and the liquid presets are typical averages β€” temperature, blend, and grade can move the real density by several percent. Treat the results as planning-grade, and add margin where the payload, pad load, or fill is close to a limit.

Shell, Fittings & Temperature Are Not Counted

The calculator computes the liquid you specify β€” the tank shell itself, external coatings, insulation, heating jackets, and internal fittings are not counted. Water at 8.34 lb per gallon is the reference; diesel, gasoline, milk, and crude oil all weigh differently, and a hot tank holds lighter liquid than a cold one.
