⚠️ Warning: Treating an imperial gallon as if it were a US gallon understates its volume by roughly 20%. A 50-litre jerrycan is 10.99 imp gal but 13.21 US gal — the same physical container, two different numbers depending on which country printed the label.

US Gallon vs Imperial Gallon vs Litre — Side-by-Side Comparison

The confusion between litres, US gallons and imperial gallons comes from the fact that the word gallon means two different volumes depending on which side of the Atlantic your grandparents were born on. The table below sets them down next to each other so you can see at a glance what you are dealing with when a supplier quotes a tank in "gallons" without specifying which one.

Imperial Gallon (imp gal)277.42 cubic inchesUK, Ireland, Australia, Canada (historical)1 imp gal = 4.54609 L ≈ 1.20095 US gal

Why the UK Gallon is 4.5 Litres but the US Gallon is 3.8 Litres

The split between the US and imperial gallon is a story of wine, ale and an Act of Parliament. Medieval England used several gallons concurrently: the wine gallon of 231 cubic inches, the ale gallon of 282 cubic inches, and the corn gallon of 268.8 cubic inches. When the United States declared independence in 1776 it inherited the wine gallon, which had been the legal standard for imported goods since the 15th century. America codified it as 231 cubic inches in the Weights and Measures Act of 1792, and that number has not changed since.

Back in Britain, the Weights and Measures Act of 1824 discarded the old wine, ale and corn gallons and defined a single imperial gallon as "the space occupied by ten pounds weight of distilled water at 62 degrees Fahrenheit and 30 inches of mercury pressure" — which came out to exactly 277.42 cubic inches, or 4.54609 litres. This became the legal definition throughout the British Empire, and countries as far apart as Australia, India and Nigeria still use gallon numbers from this standard when quoting vintage equipment or discussing fuel economy in miles per gallon.

The practical consequence is that an imperial gallon is about 20% larger than a US gallon. A car that does 30 miles per US gallon is doing roughly 36 miles per imperial gallon — which is why old brochures from British car makers always quote higher mpg numbers than their American counterparts using the same engine.

💡

Tip

Most petrol stations worldwide now dispense litres — the only major economies still pumping in gallons are the United States and Liberia. When you see a pump that still shows "gallons," ask which one or check the fine print: if it is in gallons at all, it is almost certainly US gallons.

⚠️

Warning

Grabbing a 20-litre jerrycan in the UK and thinking it holds about 5 gallons? In imperial gallons it is 4.4 imp gal, not 5. Using the US coefficient 0.264 on imperial gallons shortchanges you by about 17% every single conversion.

❌

Do Not

Never use the shortcut "1 L ≈ 0.264 gal" when dealing with imperial gallon specifications. That number is US-only. The imperial factor is 0.219969. Mixing them is the single most common mistake in international ordering of water tanks, jerrycans and fuel cans.

Memorising six decimal coefficients sounds like a chore, but you only need two of them in your head — the rest fall out by division. Copy these cards into your notes or hit print before you place that tank order across borders.

Common Real-World Sizes — Litres, US Gallons & Imperial Gallons

The confusion between litre and gallon almost always surfaces with a specific object — a fridge water tank, a caravan jerrycan, a barrel of oil. Below are the numbers you are most likely to see quoted, with both gallon versions side by side so you can spot a specification error at a glance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many gallons is 10 litres?▼

10 litres converts to exactly 2.64172 US gallons and 2.19969 imperial gallons. If you are at a UK petrol station the number you see on the pump is litres, but old signs may still quote gallons — at roughly 4.54609 litres per gallon that would be 2.19969 imp gal.

Why are there two different gallon sizes?▼

The US gallon and imperial gallon diverged in the 19th century. The US gallon is 231 cubic inches, defined by the Weights and Measures Act of 1792 based on the old English wine gallon. The imperial gallon, adopted in 1824, is 277.42 cubic inches — based on the ale gallon — so it is about 20% larger. The imperial system also defines the imperial pint as 1/8 of that larger gallon, which is why a UK pint beer is 568 ml while a US pint is 473 ml.

How do I convert cubic metres to gallons?▼

1 cubic metre (m³) equals 1,000 litres exactly. From there the chain is straightforward: 1 m³ = 1000 L = 264.172 US gal = 219.969 imp gal. For water tanks, swimming pools and shipping containers this cubic metre ↔ litre ↔ gallon shortcut saves several decimal steps.

Is the liter to gallon conversion exact?▼

The liter itself is defined as 1 cubic decimetre — exactly 1000 cubic centimetres — so all metric relationships are mathematically exact. The US and imperial gallons are defined in cubic inches, and since 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly, the conversion coefficients are also technically exact; we round them to five or six significant figures for practical use.

What gallon do petrol stations use?▼

In the United States, fuel is still priced and dispensed in US gallons. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, pumps display litres, though some rural stations still show the imperial gallon equivalent. Australia switched fully to litres in 1974, Canada in the 1970s with dual displays well into the 2000s.

How much is 5 gallons in litres?▼

Five US gallons is roughly 18.93 litres. Five imperial gallons is about 22.73 litres — almost 4 litres more. This is the single most common real-world case of mixing the two definitions, especially for travellers filling jerrycans in different countries.

How many US gallons in 1000 litres?▼

1000 litres is 264.172 US gallons (1000 × 0.264172) and 219.969 imperial gallons. A 1000-litre bulk water tank therefore holds about 264 US gallons or 220 imperial gallons — easy to mix up when ordering a replacement tank from an overseas supplier.

Can I use 1 L ≈ 0.264 gal for imperial gallons too?▼

No — this is the most common approximation mistake. The coefficient 0.264 is the US gallon factor. For imperial gallons you need 0.219969, which is 16.7% smaller. Using the wrong gallon definition will understate imperial gallon volumes by about 20% relative to US gallon expectations.
