⚙️ Dry Shell Estimation

Tank Weight Calculator — Steel, Stainless Steel & Aluminum Shell Weight

Empty tank shell weight from material density, geometry and wall thickness. Pair with the liquid weight calculator to get total shipped weight (shell + full contents). Covers vertical cylinders, horizontal cylinders with heads, and rectangular shells.

💡 Tip: Add shell weight + contents weight from the liquid weight calculator for total truck/pad weight. Open the main tank calculator to confirm your vessel's geometry before running weight.

Why Shell Weight Matters

Dry shell weight sets the baseline for every logistical decision — shipping, crane lift capacity, truck payload, foundation design, and stand sizing. Add the weight of the liquid inside and you have the full weight the pad or truck must support. A 275 gallon steel heating oil tank is about 200 lb empty and 2,100 lb full (275 gal × 7 lb/gal oil + 200 lb shell). The tank weight calculator gives you the dry shell number; the liquid weight calculator gives you the fill number. Use both together for total load.

💡 Measure wall thickness at an exposed edge. 3/16–1/4" for small steel, up to 1/2" for pressure vessels. Plastic and glass are thinner.

⚠️ Add 5–10% for welds, paint and fittings. Real tank weight is always more than bare shell surface × thickness × density.

❌ Don't confuse shell weight with hydrostatic weight. Shell is the metal/plastic; hydrostatic is the force liquid pressure exerts — use the pressure calculator for that.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I estimate an empty tank's shipping weight?▼

This calculator gives you the dry shell weight from material density and surface area. Add about 5–10% for weld material, paint or coating, and any fittings, valves and brackets. The empty shell of a typical 275 gal steel heating oil tank is about 180–220 pounds, plus another 30–50 lb for fittings. Always compare against the manufacturer's empty weight spec if you have it — field estimates are good to ±20%.

What is the wall thickness for my tank and how do I measure it?▼

Steel tanks usually run 3/16–1/4 inch (5–6 mm) for small vessels, up to 1/2 inch (12 mm) for high-pressure or large tanks. Plastic IBC totes use 3–4 mm (0.12–0.16 inch). Glass aquarium walls are 4 mm for small tanks up to 10 mm for large ones. Measure with calipers at an exposed edge — the top rim of a tank or aquarium lets you see both sides of the wall.

How much do dished or hemispherical heads add to the weight?▼

Dished heads are curved — their surface area is slightly more than a flat disc of the same diameter. A 24-inch diameter flat disc = π × 12² = 452 square inches. A hemispherical head of the same diameter = 2 × π × 12² = 904 square inches (double the flat). Surface area translates directly to steel volume and weight — a hemispherical head adds roughly twice the steel of a flat head of the same diameter. The calculator accounts for this with the head-type dropdown.

Can I calculate weight of a plastic tank with this tool?▼

Yes — enter the plastic wall thickness and use the aluminum density as a starting point (it is lower than steel). For HDPE or LLDPE plastic, density is about 60 lb/ft³, so you can divide the result by roughly 8.2. For exact numbers, get the material density from the manufacturer's datasheet — plastics vary more than steel does.

How does tank shell weight relate to full tank weight for a fill plan?▼

Empty shell weight + contents weight (from liquid-weight-calculator) = total filled weight. For a 275 gal heating oil tank: shell ≈ 200 lb, full oil ≈ 1,925 lb (275 gal × 7 lb/gal), total ≈ 2,125 lb. For propane at 80% legal fill: shell 200 lb + 400 gal × 4.1 lb/gal = 1,840 lb. The pad, stand and truck payload must all account for the maximum total — not just contents weight.
